Prices in Europe were also expected to be lowered by about the same amount.

Hours after Nintendo’s announcement, Sony Corp. announced a price cut in Japan for its PlayStation Portable model called PSP-3000 by 15 percent to 16,800 yen ($190) from 19,800 yen ($220), starting Oct. 1. The price had already been cut in the U.S. to $169.

It seems as though cybercriminals all over the world love Jacko and the President Obama too….Wait a minute…….not really, they are simply criminals and love to do what they only do.Ok ok coming to the point really is that Panda Security, the Cloud Security Company, today announced that PandaLabs, the company’s laboratory for detecting and analyzing malware, has published an analysis of major malware campaigns in 2009 and determined that cybercriminals are more frequently using current events as their primary vehicles for distributing malware.

Michael Jackson’s death, swine flu and Barack Obama’s political campaign and presidency have been the top issues used by hackers in the past year to distribute viruses via email or through social media such as Twitter or Facebook. By being aware of people’s increasing use of the Internet to search for the latest news on social events, virus creators are relying upon highly trafficked terms and the latest news items as bait to spread viruses.

Issues involving applications for spying on partners when suspecting infidelity are also highly successful. For example, attackers have been offering applications that supposedly allow people to read the SMS messages sent or received on a specific cell phone via the Internet.

PandaLabs’ study of the top issues cybercriminals used from January to July to distribute viruses resulted in the following breakdown:

Finally the confirmation of a long-rumored device, the BL40 “New Chocolate” has brought back the appetite for it too. This LG chocolate touch-based phone features a gorgeous four-inch display and more closely resembles an actual chocolate bar than any of its forebears did.

This LG chocolate phone is certainly a pretty one. Wrapped in tempered glass, it is elegant, thin, and classy. LG didn’t share too much information, but we certainly like what we LG did say about it.

The LG BL40 New Chocolate has a four-inch, high-definition display with the odd 21:9 aspect ration. Most widescreen phones stick closer to the 16:9 aspect ratio of today’s HDTVs. LG says the BL40’s 800 x 345 “real VGA” display translates to a “panoramic, cinema-like quality and optimal mobile computing experience.”

LG also notes that this widescreen aspect ratio is great for browsing the Web, which apparently LG expects users to do by holding the phone sideways.

In the press release, LG’s CEO, Dr. Skott Ahn, notes, “The initial response to the new LG Chocolate phone has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. Although much interest seems focused on the striking shape of the handset, the real surprise will be when people discover the advantages of the 4.0-inch screen in terms of viewing pleasure and ease of use.”

Another interesting nugget about this LG chocolate is that it uses LG’s dual screen user interface. This means users will be able to view and interact with two different types of content at the same time.

The BL40 will be available before the end of the third quarter in 54 countries around the world. LG didn’t say what radio technologies are embedded in the BL40, but with such worldwide availability, it’s safe to assume that it uses GSM-based radios, which are more prevalent the world over than the CDMA radios in the LG Chocolate phones sold byVerizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless.

Just days after Microsoft Corp.’s $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo Inc., rival Google Inc. has opposed the deal, claiming it is a threat to the underlying principles of the Internet.

Google’s dislike of the potential deal is no surprise as it challenges the company’s position in the online search, display advertising and mobile arenas.

“The openness of the Internet is what made Google — and Yahoo — possible,” said David Drummond, senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer at Google, Mountain View, CA, in a Google blogpost. “A good idea that users find useful spreads quickly. Businesses can be created around the idea. Users benefit from constant innovation. It’s what makes the Internet such an exciting place.

“So Microsoft’s hostile bid for Yahoo raises troubling questions,” he said. “This is about more than simply a financial transaction, one company taking over another. It’s about preserving the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation.”

On the other hand, Microsoft believes the deal will establish a more competitive marketplace and levels the playing field. As of now, Google is the No.1 online search and advertising company.

“The combination of Microsoft and Yahoo will create a more competitive marketplace by establishing a compelling No. 2 competitor for Internet search and online advertising,” said Brad Smith, general counsel for Microsoft, in a statement. “The alternative scenarios only lead to less competition on the Internet.

“Microsoft is committed to openness, innovation and the protection of privacy on the Internet,” he said. “We believe that the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo will advance these goals.”

The Yahoo and Microsoft merger is clearly an attempt to create a company that has a chance in challenging Google’s increasing clout in the online advertising market, said Roy Shkedi, CEO of AlmondNet, New York.

“The question is whether Yahoo and Microsoft, which each failed separately when trying to compete with Google, will be able to compete with Google more successfully when combined,” Mr. Shkedi said. “I am looking on the merger in light of market trends.

“As people become more Web savvy, they spend less time on the portals and more time on the long tail, which is why all the large players have been repositioning themselves in the last year as ad networks and ad exchanges looking to provide advertisers with a main point of contact through which they could buy online media on the portals and elsewhere,” he said.

Yahoo’s management and board of directors haven’t accepted Microsoft’s bid yet. However, Google’s opposition may help Microsoft get Yahoo’s approval as both companies have always attempted to outdo Google. So it’s fair to ask if Google’s outward worry regarding the acquisition will push Yahoo to accept Microsoft’s bid.

Interestingly, Google is the last company that should talk about market dominance.

Google receives approximately 75 percent of paid search revenues worldwide and its share continues to grow, according to Mr. Smith.

Google currently has more than 65 percent search query share in the United States and more than 85 percent in Europe. Microsoft and Yahoo, on the other hand, have roughly 30 percent combined in the U.S. and approximately 10 percent combined in Europe.

This data makes observers wonder whether the deal really does threaten the underlying principles of the Internet or if it’s just a threat to Google.

Expect scrutiny from antitrust regulators as well as Microsoft’s nemesis, the European Commission, which also scrutinized Google’s recent acquisition of online ad exchange DoubleClick.

Google went through an eight-month investigation until the acquisition was finally approved by all the necessary organizations. Google’s buyout of DoubleClick increases the Internet giant’s strength of data collection and reach as well as dominance in online search and display advertising.

“This hostile bid was announced on Friday, so there is plenty of time for these questions to be thoroughly addressed,” Microsoft’s Mr. Drummond said. “We take Internet openness, choice and innovation seriously. They are the core of our culture. We believe that the interests of Internet users come first — and should come first — as the merits of this proposed acquisition are examined and alternatives explored.”

“Kiki” is the codename for the new Sony Ericson phone.They call it the “purity product” and the surface of Kiki  is influenced by a unusual structure and only a few keys; the design is nothing like we’ve previously seen from Sony Ericsson.

Kiki’s display seems to be made of glass, and the screen image appears to be projected onto this glass surface. It makes it possible to create a sort of depth in the screen image, and it looks rather exciting. We’re very much looking forward to seeing more of this.

We currently don’t have any specific information about the features of Kiki, and the design doesn’t offer a lot of hints. There isn’t any visible camera on the phone, and the screen icons seem to prove that it isn’t a particularly advanced mobile phone.

We’ll naturally follow up on the case, when more information about the phone is available.

iMesh is a media and file sharing client with online  social network features, available in 9 languages. iMesh operates the first “RIAA-approved” P2P service, allowing users residing in United States and Canada to download music content of choice for a monthly fee in the form of either a Premium subscription or a “ToGo” subscription. A third option is also available for users (residing in either country) to permanently purchase tracks for $0.99 each, without a subscription.

In addition to the paid content, iMesh allows all users (regardless of origin country) access to “non-copyrighted” music and video files. A legalized ringtone download service is also available, allowing users to purchase songs for use as cellphone ringtones.

Through this exclusive multi-year, worldwide license agreement, SOE will develop and publish an MMO based on Ramayan’s story of mythological lore. Virgin Comics will serve as a creative consultant on the project. Virgin’s creative involvement with SOE’s game development team will be spearheaded by its President and head, Suresh Seetharaman, who has also overseen the development of the comic series. Also involved is acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, a co-founder of Virgin Comics.

Unlike it predecessors, the new Pro version features a colour LCD screen that displays iPhone-like applets that monitor and channel common office applications such as Outlook E-mail, Calendar Events and Tasks as well as RSS feeds.

The idea, says 3D Connexions president Deiter Neujahr, is the same as that behind the mouse itself: Letting designers keep their attention on the task at hand without the distraction of switching windows or hunting for quick keys.

“The SpacePilot Pro’s LCD Worldflow Assistant gives at-a-glance visibility, whether its e-mail, calendar events or RSS feeds,” he says. “It’s push technology but the user can easily customize what they do and don’t want to see. The intention is to focus you on your design work, with fewer interruptions to your workflow and less clutter on your main display.”

3D Mouse 101
For those unfamiliar with 3D mice, the concept is similar to that of the flight controls available to a jet fighter pilot. Since they don’t have the luxury of taking their hands off the flight stick or thrusters controls, pilots require access to all the plane’s major functionality, from machine gun trigger to changing HUD display modes, to be literally at their finger tips.
Pushing the cap straight forward and back, for instance, zooms the view, while pushing and pulling the cap right, left, up and down pans the display view. At the same time, users can tilt a selected 3D object along its x-axis by tipping the cap front and back while a left or right tilt rolls the selected object. Finally, twisting the cap provides control over the object’s spin. The real benefit (and sometimes challenge especially for new users) is that designers can perform all of this manipulation simultaneously so that they can navigate to any particular view quickly.

New and Improved
One of the improvements of the SpacePilot Pro, Neujahr says, is that the company has further refined its model manipulation controls. For instance, the Pro’s cap movement is stiffer than earlier models, lessening the potentially frustrating experience of accidentally tilting while zooming or the object drifting out of frame while otherwise manipulating it.

In addition, the SpacePilot Pro driver software allows users to fine tune the sensitivity of any particular axes through a series of sliders. Users can also selectively turn pan, zoom, tilt, etc., on and off as necessary via the 3D mouse’s function keys. This can be particularly helpful while in 2D sketch mode so that the drafting view doesn’t begin to accidentally revolve in the view port. Then, once in 3D modelling mode, zoom and/or pan can be de-activated so that a model only spins, rolls or tilts but won’t drift off screen or require re-centring. If a view does get out of hand, for whatever reason, the Pro provides a “Fit” button that automatically centres the selected model and normalizes the zoom factor.

Dual Function Keys
In addition to manual manipulation of 3D objects, the Pro provides a pyramid of five dual-function QuickView Navigation keys on the right side of the device that correspond to set views: front/back, top/bottom, left/right and two isometric views. Pressing the first of these keys, for example, rotates a model to its front view, while pressing and holding the same key brings up the back view. The fifth key rolls the selected model either clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Keys along the left side of the Pro further negate the necessity for using a keyboard. At top left, the Pro has the familiar ALT, CTRL, SHIFT and ESC keys as well as another set of five dual-function buttons. Rather than having set functions, these keys are what the company calls Intelligent Function keys in that they are adaptive, performing different commands depending on the active application and the modelling mode its in.

Form Factor
The MobiBLU A7 is indeed a very neat looking player and reminds me of the Philips GoGear SA1355 that was out in 2007 around this time. The funny thing is there was not much information I could find on this device when I was scanning the internet for specs. Like the SA1355, the A7 has a very classy looking reflective front with a series if what seemed to be simple navigation type keys neatly arranged vertically. The 1.1-inch monochrome OLED display is large and clear enough to display all the relevant options. On one side is a Power Switch and on the other is mini USB port that doubles up for charging the battery as well as connecting to the PC for transfer of data. Right beside that is a standard 3.5mm earphone socket.
Features and Performance
Interface
The interface is pretty standard as DAPs go. Nothing to write home about. Navigation will take a little getting used to, but rest assured in about 5 minutes of fooling around and maneuvering through the various features and settings you’ll have it down pat. The icons are large and clear to follow, so are the sub menu systems. A five way nav-pad would have been a whole lot easier to get around as the vertical buttons require a switch between the Skip Keys used for moving through the main menu and the volume keys for the sub menus.

Music
On the whole the music quality is not bad at all. I could have done with a little more volume (which goes up to a weird number i.e. 32). It’s not a big deal though and it manages to help focus on something other than the city so it’ll do. There are EQ settings to chose from incase you’re looking to adjust the output to your preference and to further enhance that option, a customizable 5 band graphic EQ setting is also available. Sadly, you’ll have to navigate through the main system while playing audio if you want to change the EQ settings.

The music player’s interface is quite amusing though. It’s very animated. It seems like there’s a couple of ‘people’ dancing in the center with music notes emitting from their legs. Track time, volume and the selected EQ option among other things are crammed on the top portion of the display. You won’t be able to use playlists in this DAP so you’ll have to settle for individual folders with your tastes segregated.

Misc. Features
The MobiBLU A7 also has a couple of other, these days considered, mundane features. These include a voice recorder that records via the integrated microphone again in .WAV format. The second feature is an eBook reader. It recognizes word files stored in a .TXT format. The display is bright and clear enough to read off of but not for very long. You’ll only be able to read about three lines as the fourth is taken up by the name of the file. That’s completely unnecessary.

Battery Life
The mobiBLU’s battery life is better than average. It ran for over 12 straight hours on a single charge. Although it requires a USB cable unlike the GoGear that has a built in connector, there’s no way I can sell this short.

The Bottom Line
The DAP is priced quite reasonably at Rs. 3, 250 (MRP) for a whopping 4GB of space. It’s also possible that it’ll be available for a lot less as the MOP (Market Operating Price) in some places is about Rs. 2, 750. 4GB this ensures that you have plenty of music for your listening entertainment at all times. It offers a better than just decent battery and pretty good audio quality for that price making it a serious consideration if you’re looking for a small, light weight music player with plenty of space and basic features.

As an extension to the launch, Sony Ericsson also announced its global Smile Hunter competition targeted at photography enthusiasts across India. Aimed at capturing spontaneous smiles, which is the USP of the Smile Shutter technology, the Smile Hunter competition will encourage users to take their best camera phone smiles and upload them on www.smilehunter.com. The competition will start from March 1st and go on till Oct 31. The photographs will be reviewed and selected by a panel of internationally renowned judges and would go on to compete at a global platform.

The Cyber-shot C510 is available across all Sony Ericsson retail outlets at an MRP of Rs. 12,195.

While reading PW Singer’s Wired for War, I was surprised by the ingenuity on both sides in coming up with unmanned—and even radio-controlled—machines that were occasionally actually used during the two biggies. I’ve highlighted six, plus an exceptional example of early computer intelligence, that are all covered at some length in the book.

At the time of World War I

FL-7 remote-controlled boat (1916) - Sadly unpictured - These German “sprengbootes” carried 300lbs. of explosives and were tethered by 50-mile wire to a dude on shore, sitting in a tower 50 feet up. The controller was too vulnerable perhaps, because they soon moved him into an airplane buzzing overhead, still trailing that long-ass cable.

Norden bomb sight (1932) - If the unmanned vehicles above represent prototypes in the body designs we see in today’s land, air and sea robots, the Norden bomb sight was the precursor to their cold, calculating brains.

A telescope would pick out a single spot on the ground, a series of gyroscopes and motors would hold that spot in sight, an analog computer would figure out the trajectory of the bombs needed to hit the target, and the whole thing would engage the plane’s autopilot to make sure the bombing went down as planned. You don’t have to read Catch-22 to know that, on bombing runs, nothing ever really went as planned, but the Norden was the closest they had to AI back in WWII, and there’s a reason it was said to “put a bomb in a pickle barrel from 20,000 feet” (even if that’s not going to do the bomb or the pickle barrel any good).

According to the reports the B2100 doesn’t come equipped with an altimeter and digital compass. This makes me wonder about its name. What it does come with is US Military Standard 810F (MIL-STD-810F) certification that makes it one of the toughest headsets around. With its urethane body (same material used to make roller blades), the handset can be fully submerged underwater up to just one meter though and only up to 30 minutes. After that is anybody’s guess. It’s also shock, water, salt, fog and dust resistant compliant with both the European IP57 certification and the US Military Standard.
